Capital Campaign The Burgess Society is now starting Phase II of its Capital Campaign. Its objective is to expand and renovate the historic old Green Briar building and jam kitchen. As this structure will still house many activities and programs provided for the nature center’s 35,000 annual visitors, much work is still needed to make the building more user friendly. Both the interior and exterior of Green Briar must be painted. Many interior rooms need new floor treatments, and much of the exterior wood trim needs to be repaired or replaced. In addition the building must be made more accessible for the handicapped, and a new enlarged entrance is to be constructed for the jam kitchen and gift shop. On the grounds we need to provide a better area for students to access the "Smiling Pool" for educational programs. The extension of the brick walkways between the two buildings and landscaping improvements must also be completed. Work has already begun on providing more space for exhibitions through the conversion of the old animal room into a gallery and all-purpose room. This space will house displays of the Society’s art, natural history and Burgess memorabilia collections. Large segments of this material have never been exhibited before due to lack of adequate facilities. The gallery will also feature the work of local artists and photographers whose work deals with nature subjects. Many of the exhibits will be used to supplement classes taught by the Education Department. Although we have received grant support for Phase II of the Campaign for Green Briar from the Weny Foundation, the Kelley Foundation and Mirant LLC, we still must raise $125,000. We hope our members will continue to respond with their support. Commemorative bricks are still available at $100 or $250 each. They will be installed in the walkway connecting the old Green Briar building with the new Putnam Education Center.
