FAMILY PROGRAMS

CRITTER CAPERS at GREEN BRIAR

Drop in for a half-hour visit with a naturalist and one of the resident animals. Learn about life cycles, habits and habitats. Suitable for families with children ages 2 ½ and up. Advance registration is not required.

ANIMAL STORY TIMES at GREEN BRIAR

During the spring, fall and winter months, Burgess Story Times are held inside at the nature center. Meet one of the animals featured in the day’s story. Suitable for families with children ages 3 and up. Advance registration is not required.

OUTDOOR ANIMAL STORY TIMES at the BURGESS MUSEUM

Join the naturalist for a lively tale of Peter Rabbit and friends on the grounds of the Thornton W. Burgess Museum in Sandwich Village. Meet one of the animals featured in the day’s story. Suitable for families with children ages 3 and up. Advance registration is not required.

JULY-AUGUST MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, SATURDAY at 10:30am

FAMILY WALKS TO COMBAT “NATURE DEFICIT DISORDER”

Spring is finally here!  Now is the time to get outdoors with the kids and get in touch with nature!  Leave the computer and television behind as you explore the wonders of nature together on a Saturday morning walk led by Thornton W. Burgess Society Naturalist Patricia Gonser.  Combat “nature deficit disorder” on these fun family walks, which meet at 9:00am on May 3, May 31 and June 14 at the Green Briar Nature Center in East Sandwich.  Walks are suitable for families with any age child.  The fee per walk for Society members is $5 adult, $3 child (family maximum $16); non-members $7 adult, $4 child (family maximum $22).  Call 508-888-6870 and register for one or more walks.

NIGHT WALKS ON THE FULL MOON

Come for a hooting and howling good time out and about at Green Briar by the light of the full moon. Look and listen for signs of animals and hear some great stories about the moon and night animals. These popular walks are always fun and suitable for families with children ages 4 & up. Advance registration is required.

HAVE A SPECIAL BIRTHDAY PARTY at Green Briar

Have a fun and educational birthday party at Green Briar. Choose from live animals, fairy houses, jam or candy making, canoeing, "arty" party, and more! We provide a one to two hour program with a naturalist with an additional hour allowed for "party" time. You provide all the party-related food and items. Fees vary with the program selected and are based on 10 participants. Additional fees are charged for additional participants. Parties are scheduled through the Education Department by calling 508-888-6870.

FAMILY CANDY MAKING CLASSES

Work as a family to create two quick and easy recipes to take home and enjoy. Children must be at least 6 years old to participate in any jam kitchen classes.

Revolutionary WAR Doctor

Join our own Dr. Phil, Society Naturalist Phil Kyle, for a hands-on exploration of common medical practices, potions and operations used by Barnstable’s Dr. James Thacher, Revolutionary War surgeon. "Patients" will be solicited from the attendees. Advance registration is required.

EARTH DAY Beach Clean Up

Families and individuals are needed to help clean up Town Neck marsh and beach area of Sandwich as part of a celebration of Earth Day. Please call in advance to register so that we have enough materials on hand. Meet in the large beach side lot near the Boardwalk at 9:00am for clean up assignments. Bring your own gloves.

EARTH DAY Everyday – Celebration of Animals

Come to the Education Center after the clean up for a special lunchtime program featuring a hands-on exploration of Endangered Wildlife. Choose either hot dog, chips and drink or peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich, apple and drink. Advance registration is required.

Amphibian ROMP

Come and learn about spring salamanders and frogs through hands-on exploration with live animals and a walk out to a spring pool in search of eggs and adults. Wear shoes that can get wet or waterproof boots. Suitable for families with children ages 4 and up. Advance registration is required.
