A NATURAL CHRISTMAS
- Create special treats for backyard feathered friends, awesome
decorations from nature, and some delicious Berry Holiday Jam - all
while your parents take some time to catch up on their Christmas
preparations.

A BRIAR PATCH CHRISTMAS STORY TIME AND HIKE
– Enjoy a special story followed by a visit with our animals. Then enjoy
a naturalist-led hike along the Briar Patch Trail.

BIRDS OF THE BRIAR PATCH – Learn
some winter bird calls and identification tricks. Then pull on the
boots, gloves and hat and strap on the “bird-noculars” as you trek along
the Briar Patch Trail with a naturalist-guide in search of winter birds.
Binoculars available for loan with advance notice.

LIVE ANIMAL STORY TIME - Enjoy a
naturalist-storyteller-led exploration of a Burgess Wintertime story and
meet animals and artifacts related to the story.

CAPE COD OWLS NIGHT PROGRAM AND WALK
– Explore local owls through artifacts and sound recordings. Then
hike out into the Briar Patch listening for Screech and Great Horned
Owls. Return to the Nature Center for a cup of hot chocolate before
heading home.

WINTER EXPLORER TREATS & TRACKS – Be a
winter explorer looking for animal signs and tracks. Work together to
create some yummy fruit leather to enjoy. Design your own “Winter Count
Skin” and Hubbub Game following patterns from Native Peoples.

WINTER TREES & TEAS – Discover the
exquisite bark of Tupelo and Hickory. Look for Christmas Fern still
vibrant along the wooded path. Explore how evergreens survive the cold

THORNTON W. BURGESS BIRTHDAY PROGRAM & STORY TIME
Families are invited to a special program celebrating the 138th
birthday of children’s author and naturalist, Thornton W. Burgess
(January 14, 1874). View a short slide presentation on Burgess History,
listen to a Burgess animal story and meet our resident Peter Cottontail.
Children create a Burgess-inspired craft and receive a paperback Burgess
Book to take home. Pre-registration is required.
Cost $3.00 per person. Children under 3yrs
old FREE.

examine study mounts, skins and skulls of some common Cape Cod mammals

Brunelle’s magical winter story Snow Moon and be inspired to learn more

SKELETON SKILLS – Go beyond fur,
feathers and skin! Explore skulls and bones to learn more about local
wildlife and their adaptations. Through x-rays, hands-on exploring of

middle of winter, Mousekin is out looking for food and finds a special

What is that knock-knock-knocking in the woods? Many of us have heard a
woodpecker’s distinct sounds, and several kinds of woodpeckers can be
found in the woods around the nature center! Create a suet and peanut
butter treat to take home for your backyard woodpeckers.

PAWS, CLAWS, WINGS & THINGS (Animal
Adaptations) – How are animals able to survive in the wild? This
program looks at the variety of adaptations that make living possible
through the study of mounts as well as through a puppet show, an
interactive nature hike and stories.

SPRING PADDLE EXPLORATION – Explore the
wilds of Scorton Creek to the East Sandwich Game Farm as warmer weather
begins. Bring a complete change of clothes including footwear. All
canoe-related equipment is provided. Meet at the Game Farm at the
Fisherman’s Landing parking area.

WHO’S EATING WHOM? FOOD CHAINS –
Explore the Briar Patch in search of evidence of food finding among the
resident critters. Create a “Russian Nesting” type model of a forest
food chain to take home.

WILD AND CRAFTY – Work with paper, clay
and paint to craft some real or imaginary animals. Hike the Briar Patch
in search of natural objects to add to your creations. Have a “meet and
greet” with our live animals.

away as we explore the wonders of weather! We’ll learn about what makes
weather, types of weather and all the ways that the weather affects us.

SPRINGTIME AMPHIBIAN ADVENTURE – Learn
about spring migrations and the life cycle of frogs and salamanders.
