Green Briar's Wildflower Garden

Our prizewinning wildflower garden is a highlight of any visit to the Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen. Situated in front of the 1780 homestead, the garden covers a locust-shaded bank, a sunny meadow, and an open swamp bordering Thornton Burgess's Smiling Pool. The garden was designed for teaching so that among the native American plants are others identified as wild in their country of origin.

Visitors are welcome to walk through the garden at any time. To enhance enjoyment of a visit, an autographed booklet for sale in the gift shop relates the history of the garden and the plants to be enjoyed. Over 300 plants are labeled and numbers on the labels correspond to numbers in the booklet where further information about each plant can be found including hints on propagation, weeds to avoid, and what conditions are advantageous for growth!

Our award-winning wildflower garden at Green Briar is maintained by our volunteer botanist Dr. Shirley G. Cross, our horticulturist Catherine Paulson and a small crew of dedicated volunteers.

Wildflower Garden Tours (Tuesdays in May through August)  Enjoy an informative and informal tour of the award winning Shirley G. Cross Wildflower Garden at 10:30 am.  Advance registration is not necessary.  Children are welcome at no additional fee.

Check out "What's Blooming" in our garden.

Gifts to the Wildflower Garden Fund

A gift to the Wildflower Garden Fund is a wonderful way to honor someone special and to help support the garden and keep it blooming for generations to come. You may also wish to consider a Mother’s Day tribute, a birthday or memorial remembrance to the garden which will be personally acknowledged as you request.
